Gent Jazz 2013 bracht ook een nieuw podium met zich mee: The Garden Stage. Daar kan je vanaf nu ook tussen de optredens terecht voor nuja, meer optredens. Plaats voor jong talent, maar ook meer gevestigde namen in nieuwe samenstellingen. 

Zo ook Sal La Rocca band: vooral actief als bassist bij onder andere Vaya Con Dios, Toots Thielemans en vele andere heeft hij intussen ook al twee albums uitgebracht onder eigen naam. En dus mocht hij de nieuwe stage openen met zijn Sal La Rocca Band. Wij hadden een geanimeerd gesprek met de man, want bovenal is en blijft Sal Italiaans.

Salvatore La Rocca ontdekte jazz op 23 jaar, voorheen was hij als rockgitarist actief bij verschillende bands. Hij maakte toch vlot de overstap toen hij van een vriend hoorde dat een lokale jazzband op zoek was naar een basspeler.

“I changed instruments for the money! (lacht) No, really, music was and still is my life. I can’t see myself doing anything else. I liked jazz at the time, but didn’t really know anything about it, but I had a friend and he was a bad saxophone player, really bad, but knew everything about jazz. And he said: you look like a bass player, you should join this band I know. And so I went to the academy, started learning and that was that. I did not really think too much about it.”

Intussen is die beslissing uitgegroeid tot een succesvolle carriere van bijna 30 jaar. Als begeleidende bassist heeft hij de hele wereld rondgetoerd, maar als componist met eigen band is hij pas aan zijn tweede album toe. Dat lijkt een hele aanpassing, maar hij vond de overgang niet minder dan natuurlijk.

“No, it wasn’t even an adjustment. I am a musician, this is what I do. I always have a guitar laying around and composing things. I have done so all my life, even on tour with other people”

Ook zijn rockachtergrond, nog steeds voelbaar is in zijn persoon en energie, geeft geen spanningsveld, maar eerder een aanvulling.

“There definitely is a place for rock in jazz. Just look at me! One does not exclude the other. That is what fusion is all about. It is what we do in a sense too. I don’t feel like I have to make a choice between the two at all. I think it’s more exciting this way”

Op zijn nieuwste album valt dat inderdaad te horen, waar gitarist Lorenzo Di Maio rockgeluiden en energie met zich meebrengt. Over de naam “This could be the end” heeft hij intussen al meerdere vragen beantwoord, dus once and for all:

“Yeah, I get a lot of questions about that. I am not retiring, at all, let’s make that clear. It’s more of a sense that every end is a new beginning. It’s a cycle, and it’s how my music is made. Once it’s finished, it’s over and on to the next. I do not intend going away anytime soon.”

In andere interviews bekende hij een cover van ABBA te hebben opgenomen met Dani Klein voor zijn laatste album. Toch is die nooit op de plaat geraakt.

“ABBA said no, or their management at least. We tried many many times and even Dani asked about it at one point but they wanted nothing to do with it. I still have the recordings though, but I guess they’ll stay there forever.”

Helaas hebben we de titel niet kunnen achterhalen, dus in mijn hoofd zal het voor altijd Fernando blijven.
